It's just like what you would imagine CAD is, but more for artistic freedom and less for precise numeric measurements. You model objects out of generic shapes(cubes,spheres etc), then modify and mould them like clay. Once that is complete materials are added to your objects and then rendered. Rendering refers to the process the cpu goes through of compiling all your settings into and image.
Yeah they're getting better. Vray-RT and Arnold sort of have that going already. When u do a quick preview render it just pops up but as usual when you up the settings for final they all grind to the same halt...

That is incredible and I don't just mean the car, well done! I am not familiar with your software, but typical software can only take you so far, and I would have to assume it is your talent that brought this the rest of the way!
